Discounted foods are a great example of a sunk cost. The sandwich or salad has already been made -- and you can't unmake it -- so the costs have been incurred. As a result, firms know that they must discount the price before it spoils or earn nothing. The lower price helps attract additional customers who have more elastic demand.
