It has been speculated that L. Frank Baum’s classic was intended as a commentary on the gold/silver standard debate of the late 1800’s. This is a great way to engage student interest in monetary theory. Dorothy, the lion, scarecrow and tin man travel the yellow brick road (gold standard) to the Emerald City (Washington DC). Students are struck by the fact that we have been debating the best way to manage the money supply for over a hundred years.
